Readiness Topic: Defensible Space

Tasks to create a buffer around your home to help reduce the risk of wildfire destroying your property

Defensible Space – Wood Pile

Relocate wood piles into Zone 2.

Defensible Space – Vertical Spacing

Create vertical spacing between grass, shrubs and trees.

Defensible Space – Trim Branches

Trim trees regularly to keep branches a minimum of 10 feet from other trees.

Defensible Space – Trees

Plant trees that are less flammable.

Defensible Space – Tree Separation

Create a separation between trees, shrubs and items that could catch fire, such as patio furniture, wood piles, swing sets, etc.

Create fire-resistant zones with stone walls, patios, decks and roadways.

Select fire-retardant and fire-resistant plant species and shrubs.

Remove or prune flammable plants and shrubs near windows.

Create horizontal spacing between shrubs and trees.

Select high-moisture plants that grow close to the ground and have a low sap or resin content.
